When most people think of an orthopedic surgeon, they imagine someone treating sports injuries, performing joint surgeries, or teaching future physicians. Dr. Robert Pedowitz has done all of those things, and more.

A board-certified orthopedic surgeon and orthopedic sports medicine specialist, Dr. Pedowitz spent his career caring for patients, training residents and fellows, conducting research, and serving in leadership roles at respected academic medical centers, including the University of California, San Diego, UCLA, and the University of South Florida.

Yet during a recent episode of The Medical Equipment World & Healthcare: Get the Scoop!, Dr. Pedowitz shared that one of his most meaningful healthcare experiences didn't happen in an operating room.

It happened at home.

When Healthcare Becomes Personal

Dr. Pedowitz's wife, Loraine, was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer's disease after he had already witnessed the progression of the disease in his mother-in-law.

Like many caregivers, he found himself making difficult decisions about safety, comfort, mobility, and quality of life.

After Loraine suffered a broken ankle shortly after moving into memory care, he realized that selecting the right seating solution would become an important part of her ongoing care.

Looking Beyond the Standard Wheelchair

During the interview, Dr. Pedowitz described observing the standard wheelchair provided after his wife's injury and comparing it to what many other residents were using.

His perspective was simple yet powerful:

If someone is going to spend many hours each day seated, comfort, positioning, and support shouldn't be considered optional, they should be essential.
That realization led him to explore alternatives designed specifically for long-term seating, ultimately selecting a Broda® positioning chair that best met Loraine's individual comfort, positioning, and caregiver support needs.

Why Seating Matters

Proper seating is about much more than transportation.

The right chair can help support:

  • Improved posture and positioning

  • Increased comfort during extended sitting

  • Pressure redistribution

  • Safer mobility with caregivers

  • Better participation in family activities

  • Enhanced quality of life

As we discussed during the podcast, every individual has unique clinical needs. Choosing the right seating solution requires looking beyond the diagnosis and considering the person's overall function, comfort, and goals.

Education Before Equipment

One of the themes throughout the conversation was something we strongly believe at CFS:

The best equipment decision begins with education.

There isn't a single chair that's right for every individual. A thorough assessment, understanding the patient's needs, and comparing available options are all essential parts of the decision-making process.

This is why CFS offers personalized equipment consultations and virtual showroom demonstrations—to help families make informed decisions before purchasing.
