Volunteering at the 25th Anniversary C.A.L.M. Conference — A Celebration of Compassion, Aging, and Community

On November 8, 2025, I had the privilege of volunteering at the 25th Anniversary C.A.L.M. (Caring, Aging, and Living Mindfully) Conference hosted by the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology in Los Angeles.

The event united professionals, caregivers, students, and community members who share a passion for improving the quality of life for older adults. As someone deeply committed to supporting seniors and caregivers through CFS Medical Supplies & Equipment and CFS Solutions DBS, being part of this milestone conference was both inspiring and affirming.

🌿 A Day Focused on Mindful Aging

The C.A.L.M. Conference highlighted what lies at the heart of healthcare — compassion, connection, and education. Attendees explored how mindfulness, mobility, and technology all play a role in helping older adults age with dignity and independence.

Throughout the day, I met dedicated caregivers and professionals whose shared goal is to empower aging adults to live safely, comfortably, and confidently — whether at home or in care settings.

💡 Bridging the Caregiver Awareness Gap

Volunteering also reminded me of a larger issue we see every day: many caregivers simply don’t know about the programs, funding, and educational resources that could make their work easier.

Recent national studies show that:

  • 67 % of adults 50+ are unfamiliar with their local Area Agencies on Aging, and 75 % don’t know about State Health Insurance Assistance Programs (SHIPs).

  • Among working caregivers, 71 % are unaware of employer-provided caregiver benefits.

  • The typical family caregiver spends about 25 hours per week and over $7,000 per year out-of-pocket on caregiving tasks.(Sources: University of Michigan IHPI, VCCHC, Caregiver Action Network, CDC Caregiver Report 2024)

These statistics reveal a critical gap: caregivers are giving their all, yet many lack access to information that could reduce stress, improve outcomes, and support their own well-being.

💬 Personal Reflection

Every interaction at the conference — from guiding attendees to sessions to sharing smiles — reinforced why I do what I do. Aging support goes far beyond products; it’s about empathy, education, and awareness.

At CFS Medical Equipment and CFS Solutions DBS, we’re dedicated to bridging that gap by offering not only medical equipment, but also education, consulting, and advocacy that empower caregivers to make informed decisions.

🌺 Looking Ahead

Events like the C.A.L.M. Conference inspire me to continue building bridges between education, healthcare, and community access — ensuring that families and caregivers have the knowledge and tools they need to provide the best possible care.

🌺 A Thank You Bobbie, Launa, USC, and the Community USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and the C.A.L.M. Conference organizers for creating such a meaningful space to learn, serve, and connect. I’m grateful to have contributed to an event that celebrates the power of compassion in care and the importance of living mindfully at every stage of life.
