Hospice Care: What Families Need to Know About Services, Equipment, and Support

At CFS Medical Supplies & Equipment, we work with families every day who are navigating complex healthcare decisions for their loved ones.

One area that often creates confusion is hospice care.

Families frequently ask questions such as:

  • What services does hospice provide?

  • What equipment is covered?

  • Does hospice provide hospital beds?

  • Will hospice provide advanced equipment such as long-term care hi/low beds?

  • Can I choose my own medical equipment provider?

  • What questions should I be asking the hospice team?

Many families are receiving services but are not always sure what is included, what options are available, or how decisions are made regarding equipment and care.

Because these questions come up so often, I invited Diane Carbo, a Registered Nurse who has worked extensively with hospice patients and families, to join me on The Medical Equipment World & Healthcare: Get the Scoop! podcast to share her insights on how hospice works, what families should know, and what questions they should be asking throughout the process.

Understanding Hospice Care

One of the biggest misconceptions about hospice is that it means giving up.

In reality, hospice focuses on comfort, dignity, symptom management, and improving quality of life for individuals facing serious illness. Hospice teams work to support both patients and their families during a challenging time while helping manage symptoms and providing emotional support.

Hospice services typically involve an interdisciplinary team that may include nurses, physicians, social workers, chaplains, aides, and other professionals working together to address the patient's needs.

Questions Families Often Ask About Equipment

As a medical equipment provider, we frequently receive questions regarding what equipment hospice provides and whether additional equipment options are available.

For example, many hospice organizations provide standard hospital beds and basic support surfaces when medically appropriate. However, families may not realize that advanced equipment options such as long-term care hi/low beds, specialty mattresses, advanced positioning systems, and other products may not always be included under the hospice benefit.

In some situations, families choose to privately purchase or rent equipment that better meets the needs of their loved one, particularly when comfort, safety, positioning, fall prevention, or caregiver assistance are major concerns.

Understanding what is covered, what alternatives exist, and how equipment decisions are made can help families make informed choices.

The Importance of Asking Questions

One of the key takeaways from our conversation with Diane is the importance of asking questions.

Families should feel comfortable asking:

  • What services are included under hospice?

  • What equipment is covered?

  • How are equipment decisions made?

  • What additional resources are available?

  • What support is available for caregivers?

  • What happens if my loved one's needs change?

The more informed families are, the more confident they can be when making important care decisions.

Supporting Caregivers

Caregiving can be both rewarding and overwhelming.

Many caregivers are balancing work, family responsibilities, medical appointments, medications, and daily care needs while trying to ensure their loved one remains comfortable and safe.

Hospice teams can provide valuable education, support, and guidance, helping families better understand the journey ahead and the resources available to them.

No Family Should Navigate This Alone

One thing we consistently see is that families often feel overwhelmed by the healthcare system and unsure of where to turn for answers.

Whether you are considering hospice care, currently receiving hospice services, or simply planning ahead, education is one of the most powerful tools available.

Our goal with this podcast episode is to help families better understand hospice services, equipment options, caregiver support, and the questions they should be asking so they can make informed decisions for their loved ones.
