Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Katalin, a representative connected with the Alliance of Claims Assistance Professionals, to discuss the importance of understanding insurance policies and how families can better advocate for themselves during difficult healthcare situations.

This was a wonderful conversation and an important topic that affects so many families navigating healthcare decisions.

Many families assume that if a doctor recommends something, insurance will automatically cover it.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

During our conversation, Katalin explained how policies often include specific requirements, limitations, and exclusions that can affect whether services or equipment are approved.

The Reality Many Families Face

Understanding health insurance has become increasingly complicated for many Americans.

Research from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that nearly 45% of insured adults report difficulty understanding aspects of their coverage, including what services are covered and what their out-of-pocket costs may be.

In addition, a national survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago found that more than half of Americans have received a medical bill they believed contained an error.

Millions of insurance claims are also denied each year. According to reporting by KFF Health News, many patients are unaware that they have the right to appeal denied claims, and a significant number of appeals are eventually overturned.

This means many families may initially be told “no” by an insurance provider when, in fact, the service or equipment could still be approved through the proper review or appeals process.

The Role of Claims Assistance Professionals

Organizations like the Alliance of Claims Assistance Professionals exist to help policyholders navigate complex insurance situations.

These professionals assist individuals and families with:
